Utterly Terrible
Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the blow of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping mechanism.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck suddenly, ravaging entire towns in its wake. Buildings collapsed like fragile toys, and the screams that erupted was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath debris, their fate unknown. The magnitude of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to confront a future forever altered.
Rescue operations sprang into action, fighting against time and dangerous conditions to locate those still alive. The nations watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster became apparent, offering prayers to the affected population.
Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of terrible hair. I couldn't make it to look right. As I was running out the door, I fell and badly all over myself. To make matters worse, I was here extremely late for work.
I in a state of utter panic. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was even worse. seemed to conspire against me. I couldn'tfocus.
By the time I reached my destination, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a true disaster.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
